Los Ortega is a blend made up of various lots produced by, Esnaider, Alejandro, Augusto, and Angel Ortega. All of whom have farms within the same micro-region of the magical coffee-producing area of San Agustin.
This coffee is very balanced and easygoing. It reminds us of a white chocolate macadamia nut cookie with some soft fruit flavors of melon and lemon. It's a great example of a clean and sweet Colombian coffee.
We are particularly excited about this coffee as we are focusing most of our Colombian buying from this group of producers, Monkaaba, in San Agustin. With this, we are able to increase our purchasing from them and buy a wider range of quality.
The reality of specialty coffee is that at the very best 50% of a producer's production will be a high-scoring micro-lot. The rest will score below a level that warrants a premium and will be sold on the local market for commodity prices that are not sustainable. With this blend Semilla, our partners in Colombia, are paying a base price for these coffees that producers would generally be receiving for 86+ coffees. What we have also found is that by blending these "lower" quality coffees together we have been left with a coffee with an elevated cup score that is really just lovely.
