Guatemala | Juan Rodriguez Cano
Washed Field Blend
Juan manages a 1.2-hectare farm called El Colmenar, situated at 1700 MASL in the El Volcancito community of Guatemala. This is a field blend from his farm, harvested in April through May 2025. Juan’s coffee is flavorful and punchy with a lot of ripe fruit flavor along with a nougaty sweetness. We are finding notes of peach, apple butter, poached plum and nougat.
Juan grew up cultivating coffee on his mother’s farm. When she passed away while he was just 11 years old, his older brother stepped in to raise him and help him take over the land she left behind. From that point on, Juan dedicated his life to coffee. Since 2013, Juan has been an active member of Café Colis Resistencia, a community group opposing the mining company that threatens their land. He is deeply involved in efforts to protect the surrounding forest and serves as president of the community organization “Guardians of Nature,” which manages a collective forest nursery.
Cherries are picked at peak ripeness and fermented in sealed bags for 24 hours. The cherries are then depulped and dry fermented for 36 hours. After fermentation the seeds are dried on raised beds for 13 days.
