Kenya | Kainamui AA

Kainamui is a washing station located in the Ngariama region of Kirinyaga County. This station is located on the Slopes of Mt Kenya at 1650 MASL. 2000 local farmers deliver their cherries to be processed here. This is a blend of the common Kenya varieties, SL-28, SL-34, Ruiru 11 and Batian harvested from October - December 2025. This was one of our favorite Kenyan coffees we tasted this season with ripe fruits and a lively acidity. We are tasting blackberry juice, black currant, raspberry and orange.

Kainamui was established in 1963 and is part of the New Ngariama Farmers Cooperative Society. The farmers that deliver here maintain very small plots of land, most with as little as 200 trees. The proximity to Mt Kenya and the glacier fed river that runs through the area create a cool and ideal environment for coffee production

Cherries are picked at peak ripeness and floated to remove defects. The cherries are then depulped, density sorted, and dry fermented for 24 hours. The seeds are then washed and fermented again for 12-24 hours. Next the seeds are once again floated and washed in channels to remove all mucilage. After this step the seeds are soaked in water for 24 hours. Finally the seeds are moved to drying beds where they dry in stages for 10-15 days.
